"Allow me to demonstrate the skill of Shaolin. The special technique of shadowboxing..."
Centum City, Busan. on Flickr.
By the subway entrance to the Lotte Department Store at Centum City, Busan, in this other-worldly fountain full of classical sculpture.
For those who have never had the pleasure of living in the Hermit Kingdom: The Lotte World in Songpa-Gu, Seoul is even more garish than this.
Name of the Doctor: Haha, I had fun with the finale. It’s been a terrible season, just terrible (I’d put the Gaiman one at the low-point), but that last one— that was a good one by me, the best it’s been in a while. I think the half-season thing has been a disaster, and the retreat from the formula Davies had of having each season be a thing hasn’t really worked (even if Moffat was pretty terrible at working that formula). But they’ve set up the 50th anniversary quite nicely so…
Plus, I really enjoyed the use of typography.
Having watched the entire seventh series in one sitting today, I will boldly claim that the second they jettisoned the Ponds it picked up a great deal. Hopefully this episode is also the final goodbye for River as well. Welcomes had been worn out a long time ago.
This new era of Who is blatantly for kids and Tumblr gifs. I didn’t try to keep up with it too hard because that’s not my bag and the split seasons didn’t help. I doubt I’ll follow series eight too closely unless the 50th anniversary show knocks my socks off.
John Hurt, though. John Hurt.
PSY - GENTLEMAN M/V (by officialpsy)
This may well be the first music video I’ve seen with outtakes.
There’s a lot happening here. Most of it will give you one of those, “Uhhh. Huhn. Hm. Yeah. Ehn.” faces.
I’ll give it this: It sure does remind me of Korea.

I hope to get the chance to check out some of these guys when I get back. Assuming my aged ears can handle it.
One of the great stumbling blocks for me in writing The Halifax Explosion is the fact that I haven’t been in Halifax for most of the last twelve years and I haven’t been hip to the music scene there in roughly twenty five.
Even if I cant find the time to rock out, I’ll need to get some reference shots of the HRM. There’s only so much you can do with Streetview.
Regardless, even if you’re not in Halifax, you should see what your local art scene is up to.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) we will be debuting the first song off our new EP ‘Back to Perfection’ titled ‘Zombies Don’t Have Girlfriends’ on Halifax is Burning on CKDU 88.1FM at 6:30pm (or listen online at http://ckdu.ca/)
After the show the track will be available for listen/download on our bandcamp http://thegraboids.bandcamp.com/
We’ll be doing this every week until the EP is out on April 20th.
Do us a favor and share the shit out of it if you like it wouldya!?
Sharing the Hal-Town love.
And this is my favourite artist on Supergirl: Renato Guedes. He wasn’t on the run for long, but he was a huge change from how Ian Churchill had been drawing her. No more frilly belt, and she wore blue bicycle shorts under her skirt (instead of apparently nothing) which meant we could get more angles of her and her skirt didn’t always magically stay flat when she’s flying. I also really love the expressions he was able to do with her through body language and facial expressions.
What was sad is that there was a bunch of reaction online about how she had now become “fat” and “ugly” and apparently preferred her to wear no underwear instead of biking shorts. Also, that this was during a forgettable storyline that was a crossover with the terrible “Amazons Attack” and “Countdown” storylines, so it wasn’t supported by a good plot (though Tony Bedard did a good job with what he had to work with and wrote Kara as a caring and determined heroine.)
The art still really stands out for me. :)
For any interested, the issues were Supergirl #20-24 from 2007.
(I love Supergirl, I must end Supergirl day on a happy note. :) )
Edit: That last image is hard to see even if you click on it:

There’s the larger version, so you can see clearly all the expressions and poses. :)
This art is abso-fuckingly awesome and the babymen who chased this artist off the title are fucking morons.
And this is also why I keep saying that folks who want to see better depictions of females in their superhero comics have to boycott Marvel and DC until their publishing arms go out of business. As far as they’re concerned, the only voices that count are the babymen. This is not going to change ever because the babymen are the ones who buy the titles no matter horrible they become. Thus, to the publishers, pleasing the babymen is the only priority. Unless you manage to replace them in the sights of the publishers this will never change.
But trying to make current hero publishers better at this has been going on, and failing, for decades now. These companies are a lost cause. It’d better to do it for yourself if you really want good, human, female depictions in superhero comics. But not everyone can make a decent superhero comic since the genre has been strip-mined into nothing.
